Cross River Overlook
Cross River Overlook

Over the river and through the woods…

You cannot get to the artist cabin at my residency with the Gunflint Historical Society without seeing this beautiful river in all its fall glory! It was a beautiful day when I set out to paint this lovely scene. Rippling water over rocks, a changing autumnal community of trees. Stately white pines towering above! I parked just off the road and brought my easel and paints right down the ravine slightly next to some pines. Thankfully, some broad rocks helped with my footing as this particular setup was a bit challenging! I stayed warm in the sun while playing with the coolness of the water in and the shades.

Aurora Lights
Aurora Lights

Night two of my Gunflint Artist Residency I was thrilled when my Aurora apps started blinging on my phone indicating that the northern lights would be out! I found a great north facing dock near Clearwater lodge, and about 20 others and myself enjoyed a night of our lives watching the lights! Sitting on the dock, I had a great 270* view of the northern lights, including its sparkle across the water. Silhouetted by the boreal forest, we watched its ghostlike dance across the sky.

Sunset on Seagull Lake
Sunset on Seagull Lake

Candy sky and popcorn clouds…

Sunset on Seagull Lake was inspired by a beautiful sunset I witnessed at the top of a rock bluff overlooking the pristine waters of Seagull Lake. The sky turned buttery orange, yellows and reds as I witnessed this serene scene. Popcorn clouds popped up in the atmosphere, adding movement and contrast to the sky.

I started this work right on the front porch of Chik-Wauk Museum during the last day of my residency.

Sugar bush is an annual retreat for our family come spring. In late February we tap the trees. In March and April we harvest the sap that comes from the giant maple trees. Hauling sap happens day and night. While the snow is on the ground, we pull sap and kids in sleds through the quiet early spring woods, clearing paths from tree to tree in our snowshoes. After the melt, we tromp by foot buckets in hand. Our sap boiler, made from an old oil drum and stainless steel cooking plates, bubbles away at the base of the house in the woods. We tend this fire for many days, boiling down the sap to golden maple syrup. We enjoy these memories throughout the year on our pancakes and waffles, a golden reminder of springtimes to come.

This painting was inspired by a moonrise I saw one day in southeast Minnesota. I was so floored by the natural beauty of the area at sunset that pulled over and took a photo. As the sun sets, rays of sunlight bask this farm in orange glory. The distant hills dance with with a warm glow, cooling into purples and reds and raw umber. The moon, illuminated against the fading blue sky, rises over the clouds.

Sometimes your Muse comes calling right after your oldest gets on the bus, you've had a cup of coffee, and you’ve just read an article on the new Van Gogh movie! I turned to my mother-in-law and said "I've got to go paint right now!" Thankfully she said she'd keep an ear out for the baby. I packed up like the wind and out I went!

The day this painting was created was crazy and amazing all at once. I got lost! At the top a steep hill, my car conked out in the driveway of someone’s home. I called the owners and asked if I could paint their beautiful view. They said “Yes!” As I painted a car pulled up and I ask if this was their view. They said, “I wish it was!” And! It wasn’t that of the people I called earlier! Thankfully, the actual owners were happy to have me paint their wonderful vista and sympathetic to my car issues.

This mushroom was found in the northwoods of Minnesota while on a mushroom hunt with our 3 year old son, Orion. After reading a book on mushrooms, Orion was excited about finding them on every walk. When Orion finds a mushroom, his first question is always, "Can I eat it?" In the case of this mushroom, it is edible. In order to find out a mushroom's edibility, we always bring it home, consult our mushroom identification book and use its dichotomous key. We then do a spore print of the mushroom overnight. Once confirmed, our edible mushroom is fried up in butter and eaten! I painted this watercolor after one of our daily mushroom hunts as a family. It will forever remind me of our summer hunting mushrooms with my little Orion in Ely.

This Golden Milkcap was found on a mushroom hunt with our 3 year old son, Orion, near Cannon Falls, Minnesota. After reading a book on mushrooms, Orion was excited about finding them on every walk. When Orion finds a mushroom, his first question is always, "Can I eat it?" In the case of this mushroom, it is inedible due to its extremely peppery taste. Golden Milkcap is in the Lactarius family of mushrooms, which can be identified by the milky substance they exude when bruised. The golden-orange color of the cap, with its striated shades of red and brown, inspired me to paint it.

America the Free, America the Beautiful. But how did we get here? Many forget that millions of sacred Bison were slaughtered during the Euro-American expansion westward in a mad dash of "Manifest Destiny". With this purposeful slaughter, countless Native Americans starved to death, and those who remained lost their traditional ways of life. This Bison skull stands alone but powerful in the face of the American Flag draped gently over its front. The White Man may have won that battle over the West, but like the comeback of the Bison, Native America is growing strong again.

Night two of my Gunflint Artist Residency I was thrilled when my Aurora apps started blinging on my phone indicating that the northern lights would be out! I found a great north facing dock near Clearwater lodge, and about 20 others and myself enjoyed a night of our lives watching the lights! Sitting on the dock, I had a great 270* view of the northern lights, including its sparkle across the water. Silhouetted by the boreal forest, we watched its ghostlike dance across the sky.

Sunset on Seagull Lake

Candy sky and popcorn clouds…

Sunset on Seagull Lake was inspired by a beautiful sunset I witnessed at the top of a rock bluff overlooking the pristine waters of Seagull Lake. Serenity Crossing

This work was inspired by hikes on the Superior Hiking Trail. A moment hiking through the woods, hearing water running in the distance. Hiking down a slight, rocky, wooded ravine, the trees part to expose the splendor of beautiful, pure, cold water flowing through the land. Splendor of color, sunshine flits through the leaves, casting a sunshine spring green glow, glints of blue sky like sapphire glitter on the water. Rocksylvania

Pennsylvania was known for being one of the toughest parts of the trail due to the whole path being a giant rock scramble! This painting captures the iconic trail during one of the toughest stretches. Pennsylvania is known by many thru-hikers as "Rocksylvania" due to these ankle turning rocks.

If you take a keen eye at the work, you will notice a single white blaze marking the path on one of the rocks in the upper left. These rock blazes were notoriously hard to see and it wasn't uncommon to lose your way through the scramble! .
